Teaching & Learning Alternatives in Education



Course Overview

This course offers the educator a deeper understanding of themselves as teachers and what it means to be a teacher in the 21st century. This course includes a number of approaches to teaching and learning other than mainstream or traditional education. This course addresses classroom assessment and testing. Educators will deepen their understanding of alternative views in education and development and discover alternative models including that of Dennis Littky and Parker Palmer. This course does not contain a curriculum development component.

 

Course Objectives

  • Examine our current need for testing and the effects of standardized testing on students.

  • Discover the depth at which educators can understand their identity and integrity in the classroom and use this new approach to teaching

  • Investigate new models for schooling

  • An exploration of new educational content

  • Conduct a self exploration of what it means to be a teacher in the 21st century
